The plan was both creative and audacious at the same time. By partnering with the developmental MENA Tour, already approved by the Official World Golf Ranking, LIV Golf seemed to have identified a credible path to have its Invitational Series events finally receive the World Ranking status the upstart Saudi-backed circuit so longingly craved. And yet did LIV officials really expect the OWGR to sign off on it with just 24 hours’ notice when ordinary it takes one to two years to approve OWGR applications? And did we mention that the MENA Tour had been essentially defunct for nearly two years?
Long story short, players competing in this week’s LIV Golf Invitational Bangkok, still won’t be earning World Ranking points for their performances. But, just as they have in the five previous events on LIV’s inaugural 2022 schedule, they will be earning some very large prize money payouts.
Sunday’s winner of the 54-hole individual competition will earn $4 million for his victory from an overall purse of $20 million. And with only 48 players in the field and no cut, everybody competing this week at Stonehill is guaranteed to take home at least $120,000.
Along with the individual event, there is a team competition that pays out $5 million overall. The four-man squad that wins divvies up $3 million, with the second-place team splitting $1.5 million and the third-place group earning $500,000.
